PlayStation iOS App
Redesigning the PlayStation mobile experience to drive engagement beyond the console.
Context
This product strategy case study explores opportunities to increase engagement in the PlayStation iOS app through an independent product simulation. Despite a large install base, the app primarily supported transactional tasks and lacked personalization that would drive habitual use. The focus was to reimagine the app as a daily extension of the PlayStation ecosystem, connecting gameplay, social interaction, and content discovery beyond the console.
Goals
The primary goal was to increase Daily Active Users (DAU) by making the PlayStation iOS app a habitual part of users' gaming routines. Secondary goals included driving PlayStation Store engagement through personalized discovery and strengthening ecosystem retention by extending gameplay, social interaction, and content access beyond the console.
How I Worked
I approached the problem end to end, beginning with product selection and business model framing to establish the ecosystem context. I translated user needs into a value proposition, opportunity solution tree, and product vision, then formalized direction through a Product Requirements Document defining goals, non-goals, and core capabilities. I prioritized features using RICE, sequenced delivery through a roadmap and prototype, and closed the loop by defining product metrics and synthesizing strategy in an Amazon-style memo.
Key Decisions & Tradeoffs
A key decision was to anchor the product strategy on personalization as the primary lever for increasing DAUs, rather than incremental UX improvements or feature parity with the console. I prioritized a Personalized "For You" experience after RICE analysis showed it delivered the highest reach and confidence for engagement impact. I also sequenced AI-powered game assistance later in the roadmap, trading immediate differentiation for technical readiness and data maturity to reduce execution risk.
Impact
The strategy defined a clear path to increase Daily Active Users by 20% within six months by improving personalization and social engagement. Secondary impact included a projected 15% lift in app-based PlayStation Store transactions and higher session frequency driven by personalized discovery, smart notifications, and social activity.
What This
Project Shaped
This work strengthened my ability to translate ambiguous engagement problems into clear product strategy anchored on measurable outcomes. It reinforced disciplined prioritization, roadmap sequencing, and executive-level communication when shaping product direction without direct authority or perfect information.
